The exhibition The Mountain of Advanced Dreams presents the results of the eponymous research-based project developed by the Italian artist collective Mali Weil as well as a video work by Swiss artist Luzia Hürzeler. The exhibited artworks enter into a stimulating dialogue with the history, architecture and the permanent collection of Thun Castle.

Departing from an analysis of the relationship between humans and wolves and its significance as a prototypical model for humanity’s relationship with nature in the Anthropocene, The Mountain of Advanced Dreams critically focuses on the so-called ‘interspecies diplomacy’ – i.e. on the abilities and possibilities that human beings have to imagine and manage different relationships with other living creatures. Through a fictional narrative and a speculative approach, the project activates the audience’s imagination and projects it into a hypothetical and desirable future where interspecies diplomacy is a core human value that is taught and practised from childhood.

The Mountain of Advanced Dreams enables the public to imagine a world that is not only utopian but arguably attainable, in which interspecies diplomacy and a cosmopolitan, respectful and intercultural attitude are prerequisites for any socio-political action based on interaction with other living beings.

Mali Weil (Mali Weil is an Italian art platform established in 2008 by Elisa Di Liberato [b. 1981, Chieti], Lorenzo Facchinelli [b. 1982, Trento] and Mara Ferrieri [b. 1977, Milan])

Luzia Hürzeler (born 1976 in Solothurn, lives and works in Geneva) 

Die Ausstellung The Mountain of Advanced Dreams präsentiert die Ergebnisse des gleichnamigen Forschungsprojekts des italienischen Künstlerkollektivs Mali Weil sowie eine Videoarbeit der Schweizer Künstlerin Luzia Hürzeler. Die gezeigten Werke treten in einen spannenden Dialog nicht nur mit der Geschichte und der Architektur des Schlosses Thun, sondern auch mit der für die Entwicklung der Region in den letzten 800 Jahren repräsentativen permanenten Sammlung.

 Ausgehend von einer Analyse der Beziehung zwischen Menschen und Wölfen und ihrer Bedeutung als prototypisches Modell für die Beziehung der Menschheit zur Natur im Anthropozän, befasst sich The Mountain of Advanced Dreams kritisch mit dem Konzept der sogenannten «interspecies diplomacy» (Diplomatie zwischen den Arten). Darunter sind die Fähigkeiten und Möglichkeiten zu verstehen, die Menschen haben, sich verschiedene Beziehungen und Interaktionen zu anderen Lebewesen vorzustellen und zu gestalten. Durch eine fiktive Erzählung und einen spekulativen Ansatz aktiviert das Projekt die Vorstellungskraft des Publikums und projiziert es in eine hypothetische und wünschenswerte Zukunft, in der die Diplomatie zwischen den Arten zu den menschlichen Grundwerten gehört und schon seit der Kindheit gelehrt und geübt wird.

The Mountain of Advanced Dreams ermöglicht den Besucher:innen, sich eine nicht nur utopische, sondern tatsächlich realisierbare Welt vorzustellen, in der die zwischenmenschliche Diplomatie und eine weltoffene, respektvolle und interkulturelle Haltung die notwendigen Voraussetzungen für jede gesellschaftspolitische Aktion sind, die auf der Interaktion mit anderen Lebewesen basiert.

HOW TO GET THERE / ANFAHRT

Please use the public transport system of Thun. You can reach the castle from the railway Station and the landing stage in approx. 15 minutes on foot. Stroll through the old city, up the castle stairs or the stairs leading from the town hall square. The public parking space City Ost Schlossberg offers space for 310 cars and an elevator up to the castle. The next closest public car parks are City Nord /Grabengut and City West.

Bitte benützen Sie die öffentlichen Verkehrsmittel. Vom Bahnhof SBB Thun und der Schiffstation Thun ist das Schloss via Altstadt über die Schlosstreppe oder die Kirchtreppe beim Rathausplatz in ca. 15 Minuten zu erreichen. Das Parking City Ost Schlossberg bietet Platz für 310 Fahrzeuge und einen direkten Lift auf den Schlossberg.
Weitere nahegelegene Parkhäuser sind Grabengut und City West.
